SKYWATERS RESIDENCES – SINGAPORE’S NEWEST & TALLEST SKYSCRAPER
American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) released designs for Skywaters Residences in Singapore, which would be the city’s tallest, with a design inspired by bamboo forest. The designs for the 63-storey high-rise feature a step-like structure rising up from a plant-filled base, with a number of empty spaces along its facade designed to look like “a bamboo forest”. At 305 metres high, Skywaters Residences would be the Singapore’s first supertall skyscraper – defined as a structure that measures 300-600 metres high surpassing Guoco Tower, the previous tallest building which stands 283.7 metres and was completed in 2016, also designed by SOM.
Skywaters Residences were designed by a partnership between DCA Architects, a local firm, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), headquartered in New York City. Because the design process took place during a pandemic, it was mostly done over Zoom between the two teams.
The building’s massing draws from the composition of bamboo forests. SOM says, “The tower is inspired by bamboo forests – biophilic design, which resonates with the vertical elements found in nature. The firm added that engineered bamboo would be used in certain aspects of the building, although no concrete details were given.
SOM also highlighted a “post-pandemic” aspect to the tower, saying that the emphasis is on occupant health and safety. “Emerging from the pandemic, the moment presents an unusual and exciting opportunity for architects to explore new approaches to placemaking that are focused on the well-being of its inhabitants,” said Nic Medrano, principal at SOM Design.
These implementations would include contactless technologies, antimicrobial materials, and increased ventilation. Renderings of the facility depict curved plinths of the high-rise covered with vertical louvers and stylised fans. Pagoda-like structures made of glass and wood cladding, which would house community amenities, project out of the plinth.[/vc_column_text][wbc_quote quote_credit=”Tatler Asia” quote_message=”6 Most Exclusive and Expensive Streets and Districts in Singapore” credit_color=”#000000″][vc_column_text]

SKYWATERS RESIDENCES – CONSTRUCTED WITH SUSTAINABILITY IN MIND
The building’s exterior would include natural materials like terracotta, which is produced in zero-waste areas, and low-carbon cement, in order to minimize the carbon generated in construction. Parts of existing foundations and infrastructure will also be reused, which will lower material needs and lower the buildings carbon footprint.
It is set to achieve a Building Construction Authority’s (BCA) Platinum certification for Green Mark. The architects said that the skyscraper would save 55% more energy than the base building.
One of the main energy needs is cooling. By including vertical and horizontal fins into the design, which facilitates heat exchange, designers reduced heat input to the building. Another tactic for cutting coolant load is by tapping the neighbourhood districts cooling plants, which are a more efficient cooling system.
Structurally, energy-efficient glass and concrete will be used, with SOM saying that concrete will include some amount of “recyclable aggregate”. Seven landscaped terraces will be scattered across the skyscrapers height, some accessible by guests from a hotel planned for the structure, some by residents in apartments. “In all, the design includes over 10,000 sqm of public, raised green space over the whole footprint of the structure”.  The architects said that the intent is for building residents to have easy access to the green spaces, where they can enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Health and well-being are also major drivers of design in skyscrapers.[/vc_column_text][wbc_quote quote_message=”New URA guidelines call for bigger spaces for homes in non-landed projects in Central Area” quote_credit=”The Business Times” credit_color=”#000000″][vc_column_text]

SKYWATERS RESIDENCES – EPICENTER OF UNPARALLELED LIVING
The ground level features a public plaza spaces that will open to the street. The welcoming lobby would direct residents to the multi-story atrium. Wood, terracotta, and stone will be used in the interior design, with a reflecting pool in the lobby area as well. On the second floor, restaurants look out onto a green area, where plants are planted to attract birds and butterflies.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

The building is also the first project to benefit from Singapore’s Central Business District Incentive scheme, which seeks to incentivise conversions of existing, older office buildings in the CBD to mixed-use developments in order to revitalize the CBD, with an expected completion date of 2028.[/vc_column_text][wbc_quote quote_message=”Consortium led by Perennial secures $3b real estate green loan” quote_credit=”Straits Times” credit_color=”#000000″][vc_column_text]
